On Maundy Thursday, we sit with Jesus and his disciples on the last night before he dies, hearing his most important command to love one another, and praying with him as he prepares to face his death. This event sets the pattern for both the Eucharist (which we celebrate every Sunday) and the central place of self-giving love in Christian faith and practice.

Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, which means command.

Maundy Thursday is the first of the great three days ('Triduum') at the end of Holy Week, an immersive experience of the last few days of Jesus' life leading up to his crucifixion. Holy Week sets the stage for the cross and resurrection, which are the pivotal events of the Christian faith.
